In souvenir shops in Vienna and other Austrian cities, you can find funny magnets with the inscription “Austria is not Australia” and similar wordplay. Nevertheless, Austrian Dominic Thiem felt like home at the Australian Grand slam tournament this January. The dyed blond first reached the quarterfinal stage of the Australian Open, where he played a smart match with world number one Rafael Nadal, and then beat Alexander Zverev. These two matches lasted a total of 7 hours and 52 minutes.
Novak didn’t get a quick victory
Novak feels great in Melbourne. He played in the Australian Open finals seven times and won titles seven times. “King of Australia” is now the Serbian’s name. He has a lot of fans at Melbourne Park, both local and from the vast Serbian diaspora. The audience supported Djokovic, even in matches with the legendary Federer. We also supported him in the fight with Tim. Moreover, everything was going so well for him.
You could even assume that this live scores today final of the Australian Open, like last year’s against Nadal, will turn out to be one-sided and will quickly end in favor of the Serbian player. Playing at 4: 1, the score on Tim’s serve became the same from 40:15, but Djokovic did not get to another break. Moreover, the Austrian, adding sharpness, suddenly took someone else’s serve and soon equalized the score-4: 4. But the Austrian lost the next game — he made too many mistakes. Throwing the ball into the net, he gave the opponent a set ball and a double error helped him implement it.
You’ve become famous, well done!
Despite the fact that the first game was in his favor, it was impossible to say that Djokovic felt comfortable on the court. Even in the middle of the first set, he had a row with the fans. Using swear words, he required them not to shout during the draws. And in the second game, the Serb made a lot of mistakes. Then he gave Tim his serve. But the Austrian also has something to praise — he played boldly and actively in this part of the match and did not concede to a more titled opponent. Dominic took a 4-2 lead, but Novak equalized.
But then he had a conflict with the referee, who warned the Serb twice for delaying the time when serving. “You have become famous, well done!” — said Djokovic, and later, unable to hide his irritation, he also grabbed the referee by the sneakers, which according to the rules of Grand slam tournaments, is punished very severely. However, this emotional outburst cost Djokovic dearly. He made a mistake, gave up his serve and the second game ended with 4: 6.
The beginning of the third set was also left to Tim.
• Games weren’t easy for him, but the score changed exclusively in his favor – 4: 0.
• The Serb continued to make mistakes, and the Austrian was clear in most game situations.
• When the score was 4:1, Novak called the medics on the court and complained of fatigue, they waited until the end of the game and gave him a pill.
• But even before that, Djokovic seemed to get on better
At the beginning of the BBC tennis fourth set, the Serb was again forced to save a breakpoint. However, he won the game. From that moment to the very end, there was a hard game, which Tim did not spoil. He played actively, diligently went forward, and performed great shots. He received compliments even from a rival. But Novak was Novak, and he didn’t want to give up his own.
The Serb won his eighth Australian Open and 17th Grand slam tournament overall. Now he is two behind Rafael Nadal and three behind Roger Federer. And he became only the second tennis player in history after Ken Rosewall to win majors in three different decades — he took his first Australian Open championship back in 2008.
